Etymology[edit]

Borrowing from Middle Iranian; compare Middle Persian ʾwstykʾn' (ōstīgān, firm, strong, sure, reliable) and see there for more.[1] Ačaṙean explains the sense development as ‘reliable, faithful’ → ‘ruler's confidant’ → ‘ruler's officer’ and points to Old Armenian հաւատարիմ (hawatarim, reliable, faithful) which is often applied to the king's officers.
